I, at a wedding reception am the point person and with a microphone in hand, the loudest person in the room. As the master of ceremony, my job is to guide the guests and inform the wedding party of what’s happening, what they can expect to occur in the near future and when. Most times, we will use the sound equipment of the bands’ or the DJ at the reception to make the announcements of the information to be relayed.
If formal photographs are to be taken, I will request that relevant guests are present at the correct time.
Following photographs, the I will then announce that the wedding breakfast is the be served, and if a receiving line is taking place, I will arrange that with the help of the ushers.
Once all guests are seated, the I will announce the entrance of the new Mr & Mrs, and lead a round of a applause.
For buffet style dinners, to keep order, then I will let each table know when they can proceed to the buffet line.
Once dinner has been served to all, the IC, in whatever order has been requested, will announce the tossing of the bouquet, introduce those who will be making a speech, and then the cutting of the cake. Every wedding reception is different and each couple may make specific requests as to what they’d like announced or what order they’d like things to occur.
As the Master of Ceremonies, I may be asked non-wedding related questions, and so will be prepared to answer questions such as where the restrooms are and where the gift table is.
Overall, the role of the MC is to ensure that amidst all the celebration, food, dancing, and drinks, that the night moves right along. Guests come to enjoy themselves and to celebrate the new couple but no one wants to linger at a wedding reception for hours waiting for the next event to occur. When taking on this role of the MC, I will act with professionality, throughout the day and reception, keeping the focus on the couple and act on their behalf, as a gracious host."
